Universities invest heavily in recruiting students, then hand them the alumni key on their way out. Belonging built from the application onward is what turns graduates into lifelong members, advocates, and recruiters."Now, you are part of the Alumni Community." Those were the program director's words on our last day. I looked around the room and saw the same question on every face: what does that actually mean? For me, it began long before day one. I was a lead to the recruitment team, then a candidate to admissions, then a student to the faculty, and only on the very last day did anyone call me a member. The whole journey was a series of qualifying gates. Was I qualified to apply? Qualified to pay? Qualified to survive the academic rigor?
I passed every test, and the reward was a key to the room, handed to me the moment I walked out the door. Now the welcome emails arrive, the reunion invitations, the little note asking me to tell someone who might be interested. But I don't feel like an alumnus; I feel like a customer who was finally allowed into the members' lounge after checkout. The institution never built a relationship with me. It ran a pipeline on me, and pipelines don't produce loyalty.
Eduardo's experience isn't the exception; it's the design. Higher education is organized in silos: recruitment owns leads, admissions owns candidates, academics owns students, alumni relations owns graduates. Every handoff resets the relationship to zero, and the student, the person, gets segmented into four different customers. The cost shows up everywhere. Students who never feel they belong. Alumni who never engage. Institutions that keep paying to reacquire the very people who were already in the building.
Open the community at application, not at graduation.
Give every admitted student immediate access to virtual activities and scale it when they enroll to current students. Belonging has to be built while people can still feel it, which means before they arrive, not after they leave.
Make alumni visible to students, not only to the development office.
Build a reciprocal network where students meet alumni years before they need a job. Alumni offer direction and experience; students bring energy and fresh perspectives. When the exchange is mutual, the connection stops being transactional.
Measure belonging like a core metric, not a sentiment.
Track engagement from first touch through graduation and beyond: retention, satisfaction, referrals, giving - all as one connected system. What leadership measures is what leadership believes in, and belonging deserves a dashboard of its own.
